The San Diego Unified School District (“SDUSD”) is the charter granting authority of 41 charter schools that collectively enroll about 20,000 students. Each charter school operates as an independent local educational agency (“LEA”) with a charter governing board that has decision-making authority over the charter school’s academics, finances, governance, and operations, including charter school staff.
If there is any difficulty with obtaining the contact information for a charter school’s administrative staff or board members, please contact the SDUSD Office of Charter Schools at [email protected] or (619) 725-7107 for assistance.
- How do I submit a general complaint about a charter school? Please direct complaints about a charter school to the charter school’s administrative staff. Each charter school is responsible for having a complaint policy with a description of the process, including timelines for a response, which may be found on the charter school’s website, handbook, or policies and procedures. To verify if a charter school is authorized by SDUSD, please view the charter school directory at the https://www.sandiegounified.org/schools/charter_schools website. If your charter school is not listed on the SDUSD directory, you may want to run a search on the California Department of Education school directory at the https://www.cde.ca.gov/schooldirectory/ website.
- How do I submit a complaint about a charter school’s enrollment process, including being asked for my child’s records before enrollment, or being encouraged to disenroll or transfer to another school in violation of Education Code section 47604(d)(4)? In addition to filing a complaint with the charter school, you may file a Charter School Complaint Form to the SDUSD Office of Charter Schools at [email protected].
- What do I do if I believe there is a severe and imminent threat to the health or safety of the students enrolled at a charter school? If there is an emergency, please immediately contact 9-1-1. If you have a complaint that alleges a severe and imminent threat to the health or safety of the students enrolled at a charter school, please contact the charter school administration and also notify the SDUSD Office of Charter Schools at [email protected] or (619) 725-7107.
