California State Assembly
The 80 members of the State Assembly stand for election every two years. Members of the Legislature may serve no more than 12 years, either in one house or a combination of the two.
California State Senate
The 40 members of the State Senate each represent 930,000 Californians. Senators serve 4-year terms, with Senators in even-numbered districts standing for election in gubernatorial election years, and Senators in odd-numbered districts standing for election in presidential election years.
California Department of Finance
The Department of Finance provides budget information and monthly updates on the state's financial situation as part of the Governor's Cabinet. Both the Governor's budget proposal in January and the revision in May are available at this site for download and viewing.
California Legislative Analyst's Office
The Legislative Analyst's Office provides fiscal and policy advice to the Legislature. Historically, one of the most important responsibilities of the office has been to analyze the annual Governor's budget and publish detailed reviews. They recently produced a basic tutorial on Proposition 98, the voter-approved initiative that provides a minimum funding guarantee for school districts.
