SD Unified Students Use Talents to Honor Dia de los Muertos at Old Town State Historic Park, Saturday is Special Event

Artwork from hundreds of San Diego Unified School District students representing over 30 different schools are now being exhibited at Old Town State Historic Park in honor of Dia de los Muertos. On Saturday, October 25 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a free community celebration with San Diego Unified work displayed at the former Captain Fitch Mercantile building and U.S. House near Robinson Rose Visitor Center.
“Our students are using their creativity and talent to honor the significant cultural meaning Dia de los Muertos has for so many families across our region,” said Shane Schmeichel, Executive Director, Visual and Performing Arts, San Diego Unified School District. “Exhibitions like this offer students the experience of having their work on display at a major venue where many people will take notice, but our lessons go much further. We are also teaching them soft skills like confidence, leadership, and the ability to articulate the meaning behind their art. As well as help them connect personal expression with cultural understanding and empower them to be seen as artists in the community.”
The exhibition features artwork inspired by themes of remembrance and resilience. Saturday’s celebration will feature hands-on art-making activities by Visions Museum of Textile Art, live student musical performance, and community partners including Sew Loka. This collaborative event with California State Parks honors cultural heritage while promoting sustainability and creative expression.
The exhibition will be on display through November 2, 2025 at no cost to the public. The project is presented in partnership with California State Parks and San Diego Unified’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA), College, Career, and Technical Education (CCTE), and Community Schools.
