Calendar Transition

San Diego Unified is implementing a multi-year plan to transition all district schools to a single traditional academic calendar to replace the current system in which there are 134 traditional and 39 year-round schools.

Transitioning schools to one calendar offers a variety of positive benefits and supports for families. Currently, some families have siblings in both traditional and year-round schools, which can pose challenges for childcare, vacations and other activities because students are not on break at the same time. A single calendar also serves families who rely on older siblings to look after younger children.

In addition, a single district-wide calendar will better accommodate students who transfer from one site to another without loss of instructional days due to mismatched calendars. Students of military families who receive orders in the spring or summer will not lose instructional time due to leaving before the year-round schedule ends.

On June 18, 2013, the Board of Education directed staff to conduct an in-depth review of moving the district to a common calendar for 2014-15 or beyond. At the January 14, 2014 board meeting, the superintendent provided an update on instructional calendar planning for 2014-15 and beyond.

Consistent with Vision 2020 goals of strengthening neighborhood schools within each of the 16 comprehensive high school clusters for greater community cohesion, transitioning district schools to a common calendar offers a variety of positive benefits and supports for families. In addition, the transition supports stabilizing enrollment as attendance data shows that absences can increase at year-round schools during the summer months (as early as May).

In May and June 2014, the board unanimously approved converting four year-round schools to the traditional calendar. The schools are Ericson, Mason, and Walker elementary schools in the Mira Mesa High School cluster and Sequoia Elementary School in the Madison High School cluster. These changes were part of comprehensive cluster master planning completed in spring 2014. Staff was directed to return with a proposal to transition the remaining year-round schools using rationale including schools serving military families and cluster or pathway alignment. This plan was presented for a first reading on October 28, 2014 and on the December 9, 2014 board meeting, the board approved the first phase of schools to move to a traditional calendar for the 2015-16 school year. In addition to schools listed above, the following schools were approved: Hardy Elementary in the Henry cluster; Johnson, Porter and Valencia Park elementary schools and Knox Middle in the Lincoln cluster; Dewey Elementary in the Point Loma cluster; Jerabek Elementary in the Scripps Ranch cluster; Hancock, Miller and Tierrasanta elementary schools and Farb Middle in the Serra cluster.

Multi-Year Calendar Planning

Based on board direction, a multi-year and outreach plan has been developed that moves the remaining district schools to a common calendar in phases over the next three years. The intent of this approach is to allow ample time for on-going communication and planning with families and schools about the transition and to incorporate the common calendar effort into multi-year budget planning.

The remaining phases of the transition plan will continue to be evaluated every year prior to implementation.

Neighborhood and Community Engagement

Feedback and planning for the transition with parents, students, staff and community members is an important part of this process. Ongoing communication to schools and families is planned in collaboration with Area Superintendents and principals based on each school's unique needs. Employee engagement is also taking place through staff meetings and through the Labor Relations office's noticing of bargaining units. As implementation of the multi-year plan continues, meetings will be held to serve each school to provide information and answer questions.
